Auto Insurance Essentials

Many of us never take into consideration auto insurance. We’re brainwashed to buy auto insurance since we’re conditioned to pay for our water costs. However, there are some that do not feel that the expense of auto insurance is necessary.

Consider the scenario of a motorist without having auto insurance. She’s to blame for a car accident and it is unable to work. She is liable for her own medical bills, the other party’s bills, and for property damage. Without auto insurance, every one of the money comes out of the woman’s pocket. Unless your own last name is Trump or even Gates, auto insurance is essential.

Auto insurance premiums could be expensive, going into the thousands of dollars per year. One way to make auto insurance inexpensive is to see if the car insurance company can split up your premium into monthly payments. Normally, you’ll fork over a preliminary down payment, and then pay out your auto insurance high quality over several months. Be aware, though, that some auto insurance companies will charge an extra fee for that service. If at all possible, pay your auto insurance premiums at least semi-annually.

One way to reduce your auto insurance premium is to lessen your coverage to the state minimums. The monthly auto insurance repayment can be as low as $20 each month. This is not the best strategy, however. Having the bare minimum auto insurance coverage is nearly like having no insurance coverage at all.

One of the best ways to pay lower rates for auto insurance is always to take advantage of as many discounts for which you qualify. There are discounts for save driving. If you’ve never held it’s place in an auto accident or have not been caught having a moving violation, you should qualify for safe motorist discounts.

Your age can factor in to your automobile insurance premiums as well. If you are between the ages of 16 as well as 25, you will have to spend higher auto insurance premiums anyway. Once you hit the magical ages of 25, or you get wed, your auto insurance rates will go down.
The auto insurance allowable you choose can also affect your auto insurance premiums. The bigger your deductible, the low your auto insurance premium.

Finally, always evaluate auto insurance rates among different auto insurance businesses. Even for identical insurance coverage, auto insurance premiums can vary widely between car insurance companies. There are many internet sites that will compare auto insurance rates for you. Talk with these websites, as well as your nearby auto insurance agents to find the best auto insurance deals.

I currently have two cars, a Toyoya and a Galant. My auto insurance will be renewed starting Feburary 1st which is in in about 2 days. I really think I will sell both cars w/in the next few wks(Toyota has high mileage and the Galant uses alot of gas) for a more fuel efficient car like a Honda. Is it possible to change automobiles in the middle of a coverage period? I’m not sure how it works. This is my 1st time with my own insurance. Thanks for the clarification!

After moving into inner Atlanta because I’ve grown tired of a completely car dependent lifestyle, my auto insurance went from 70 dollars a month to nearly 160 based solely on my location.

Not only is this unfair and stupid, it seems to me to defy logic. I would think the suburban commuter who is spending lots of time in his car every day is more prone to claims than me, who barely has a reason to use my car anymore.

My wife was hit by a car while riding her bicycle on the sidewalk. She needed surgery and now bills are really adding up. Our health insurance says the auto insurance is responsible and the auto insurance says our health insurance is responsible. We are constantly being handed back and forth should we seek out a lawyer and risk owing more money to more people? What steps should we take? Are we out of luck? We live in the state of Michigan.

I can think of ta few ways:

    1. We don’t HAVE to drive

    2. If we do drive, most states require insurance, but also may take a bond or proof that you have money to compensate

    3. Auto insurance is mandated by the state, not the federal government

How can a government, who supposedly stays as far out of a capitalist economy as possible, enforce that you purchase auto insurance? Isnt that a consumers right to buy or not buy?

One could argue that the privilege to drive at all is granted by the government, and you should abide by their requirements. But by that logic, wouldnt having insurance first be a prerequisite before you could get licensed?

Hi, I’m going to be a first time driver in about 5 months and I’ve heard auto insurance is quite expensive being around $2000 – $3000 a year for first timers. I’ve only saved up about $800 and work on the weekends because i take honors and AP classes which take up all my time along with track and clubs. I know there are certain discounts like the good student one and the driver’s ed one which I’m taking soon. I make around $150 a month and by that time, I’ll only be like half way there so does anyone have any suggestions? Please don’t be like “obviously, money doesn’t grow on trees and isn’t that easy” I know that and that’s why I’m asking. Is there like any way to make money online or any particular things I could do. I can’t go around selling lemonade or mowing lawns because I wouldn’t nearly have enough business to pull it off. Thanks.

P.S. If there are ways to make money online, what would you suggest? (bludos, firepa, etc.)

Can I just call them and ask them to send me a monthly fee and get insurance resumed or do I need to go to insurance place and talk to Insurance sales agent and pay $200 finders fee again? I don’t want to pay those fees again. Is there a way to resume my insurance without those extra fees. I am a California resident.

I need general information concerning auto insurance complanies that pay claims directly to the driver. They want me to absorb all costs (repairs, rental, etc.) and then they will issue me a “reimbursement” check. I don’t want reimbursed for something that their insured driver did to me! I just want them to cover all costs associated with the claim! What, if any, legal action can I take to have the matter proceed in my favor?

How work the liability here? Let's say it's not my fault but I crash in a schoolbus and 3 childrens will need medical treatment for the rest of their life because of me. Who will pay for it?
And what if it's my fault?

[ In France, we have something called "civil responsability" that will pay for that. It's automatically included in every car insurance. ]

I am also browsing the net for cheap but good insurance. I want it cheap because the car is worth nothing. But I want it good because i am a young (no experience) driver. Any tips and links to some websites are welcome.

    Thank you very much.

My auto insurance will not be renewed due to a very bad judgment on my part (I own my mistakes) My car was stolen when I loaned it to my ex-boyfriend’ in Mexico…..I freaked out and ‘lied’ about where the car was stolen from. The car was found by my ex-boyfriend a few days later and I notified my insurance; I told them the truth what happened owing to my lie and I dropped the clam. They are not renewing my insurance stating that I am ‘high risk’ My question is this….will I be able to get other insurance? I have NO tickets, accidents, no claims, no bad driver record anything. I am STILL covered now and seeking other insurance, does the new insurance have access to what the old insurance said? Again, I have coverage until the end of Jan. ’09, and nothing else wrong EVER although I know what I did was very wrong…..I just freaked out. Please help….thanks

After auto accident, at fault person’s insurance delaying medical payments and wanting me to sign away all rights and a false statement before they will pay the bills…this is so distressing..
Firstly ‘Thank you ‘ to everyone taking their time to answer.
One false statement the Ins.Co want signed is ‘Doubtful and Dubious case’ and the other is about any future medical treatment we may require, the right to claim for them if they are proved to be related to the accident.
The Ins.Co admits their client at fault but will not accept liability for him…I thought that was what insurance premiums were for?
What concerns me most is the total disregard of compassion in this process .
Not everyone has health insurance and some health insurers will not pay for RTA’s.
It seems to be all about the money doesn’t it? And about clogging up the Health system so hospitals have to wait for payment too, one nasty circle.
We are being bullied and at a time we are most vunerable.
I have the Complaint form from Insurance Commisioners Office. For us it’s not the money it’s the words on the settlement.
I have the Right ..not to sign dishonest statements haven’t I?

We’re pretty sure they are nitpicking about things because they are not writing new policies for Californians, but are keeping existing customers for now.

I know this is long but please bear with me.

Rather than set up a separate government run medical insurance or expansion of medicare to the general public….One criticism of government care is that it will be in direct competition with existing providers. Ultimately siphoning insurance customers away from traditional plans and onto the rolls of govt care causing these providers to go out of business.

Here in my state the auto insurance companies MUST offer the same basic minimum coverage in order to do business in the state. Everyone here must have at least the same basic level of insurance (both auto and medical) . You can go to any provider you choose and this basic minimum insurance level costs the same . If you want more insurance you can pay for additional coverage. But that basic plan is available to all.

So why not have a similar program for medical insurance as part of a nation wide group policy. This group can be subsidized by the government but it would be managed by the existing insurance providers. (In other words if you want to be in the insurance business you must offer and support this minimum plan which would be a foundation for any other plan you offer) The govt pays the insurance company a flat rate to manage each person enrolled in the basic plan.
The more money the company saves (the better they manage the insurance) the more money they keep. However if that company provides poor management it will cost them. Either subscribers will change management companies if they feel they are getting a raw deal or wasteful management would not be payed for by the government.

One advantage I see here is that consumers would have an alternative providers to go to if they feel wronged by a particular management company. Insurance providers also have an incentive to offer additional services to the basic plan members in order to attract more subscribers and earn money.

With a govt program like medicare your stuck with the one provider (the governement).

As they say One Choice is NO Choice….

If someone wants additional insurance they can buy additional coverage from any provider they choose. But No one could be denied coverage for the standardized basic plan. Since everyone is part of this national group policy the basic insurance is portable and independent of supplemental policy one may have. So if you change jobs or move to a different state you may loose the supplemental policy BUT your basic coverage remains intact. You merely transfer the company that provides the management services for the basic medical.

Insurance providers would get paid by the fed to manage the participants in the basic plan for each participant in the basic plan. this would put market forces into play for the insurance providers to make money by attracting additional participants through better service or offerings. COunter to this is if the consumer gets crappy management services they can transfer to any other insurance provider.

I know there are many different sites where I can compare auto insurance quotes. I am wondering if there are any sites that have local agents available on them? My local agent just retired and I am looking around for new coverage, I just don’t want to call everyone in the phone book you know.

I’m currently a college student and would like to purchase my own auto insurance in Ohio (and no longer be included on my parents insurance). Does anyone have any tips on how/where to get good, affordable auto insurance? Are there any companies that you would recommend? Or ones that offer student/good student discounts?

I heard about a company called USAA for auto insurance yesterday. I think it’s a website for military officers, and ex-officers or enlisted people. My dad was in the Air Force and I think that qualifies, but I dont know how good this company is or how well they deal with claims. Please tell me about your experiences with them.

How long does the auto insurance company pay you disability? And if they always have to pay the maximum years, or can they stop whenever they want.
This is an Automobile Accident Case, and my Insurance is sending me my Disability Checks. My knowlegde is that in Michigan the AutoInsurance can pay you 3 Years. But i just wanted to know for sure if that is correct. Also, if the case gets settled, before the three years do they have to pay me the whole 3 years.

Ever since debated started in regards to Obamacare, conservative pundits and politicians have been arguing that making people buy health insurance is unconstitutional. That putting people in jail with fines for not buying something is wrong. Well, what’s the difference with auto insurance. People HAVE to have car insurance in the US and are put in jail if they don’t. I don’t see the difference.

I’m 16 and a half. I live in California. I got my drivers license yesterday. My dad has farmers insurance. Adding me to his plan will double his monthly bill. I am a VERY good driver, i live in a small city, and i never go on the freeway. Is it alright if i drive without adding myself to his insurance plan? i don’t think $200/month is necessary. Also, it is not legal to drive in California without financial coverage so if i get pulled over, will i get into trouble?(the car’s covered so im partially covered rite?).
    Thank you

    Just wondering how this works.
Let’s say this happens one day….
I cause an auto accident and I’m injured. My insurance will cover up to $5,000 for my medical bills.
I have a heath insurance policy that has a 3,000 deductible and once that limit is reached, the health insurance company will cover everything else. (0% coinsurance on my behalf).

Will the auto insurance be used towards my health insurance deductible if the above said scenario should happen?

I am 18 years old and I am trying to buy insurance for my car. I noticed that the prices for insurance are really high for teen drivers. I was just wondering if my parents could buy the insurance under their name so the payments can be cheaper or does the policy have to be under my name.
My car is registered under both my father and my name.

Our jeep was at red light when hit from behind by a sedan. The sedan drove off (hit and run.) However, we were able to get the license plate number and called the police; they came and created a report. Additionally, they actually found the physical license plate in the street, so there was no doubt about which car hit us, and there were witnesses to the accident.

We only have liability coverage – not collision – so our insurance (Geico) won’t cover a rental or any repairs on our car (which is basically totaled.) Geico did contact the other car’s insurance (Allstate) so that we could file a claim.

According to Allstate, the car’s owner is denying knowledge of the accident, and because we didn’t actually see her in the car, they have to investigate further. She says the driver was driving without permission, but as far as we know she didn’t report the car as stolen.

In the meantime, we need a rental; is there any way to press Allstate to make a decision faster or pay out some money now? What can we do if the insurance company refuses to cover anything?

If the car’s owner is in possession of the car still, doesn’t that mean it wasn’t stolen?
Additional question – if the owner’s insurance refuses to cover anything, what should we do at that point? Can we try to sue? Unfortunately, we didn’t see the person driving so I guess it would be difficult to track down the actual driver responsible, though sound sort of sounds like the owner might know who it was, especially if she’s still in possession of the car (i.e., it was borrowed without permission but not necessarily stolen.)

I just got my license. I am not on my parents auto insurance policy yet however both my parents are insured. If I were to get into an accident, could I call the Auto Insurance company and put myself on the plan before they realized that the accident occurred? How do insurance companies find out about accidents? Like do they know as soon as police show up? Please don’t tell me to just pay for Auto Insurance because of course I know that.

    Hello all,

My current auto insurance is ending next month and the renewal form just came in. Coincidently, I was offered a better deal from another auto insurance that was less than half of what I currently am paying. I called and check and it was the same coverage.

My question is that do I need to let them know that I will not renew my current auto insurance with them? This is my first time planning on switching and I would like to know if there is any penalties or anything in general I should worry about.

If a drunk driver is responsible for an accident and the victim became disabled, who pays for the damages? Does the auto insurance pay or does the drunk driver has to use his private assets and income to pay?

I crashed my car and AAA is telling me the car is going to be totalled because the amount of repairs is > the value of the vehicle.

A “settlement advisor” called me today to offer me $13,000 for my car (2005 PT Cruiser Turbo Limited, fully loaded, Nav system, moonroof, 41000 miles). I owe $15,900 on it still (no gap insurance)….and Kelley Blue Book values it at $16,415, NADA at $15,675 and Edmunds at $15,827. I complained and the advisor said “we use Auto Trader b/c Blue Book is inflated”, but he looked up a similar car (touring edition, much cheaper) and said he could up the quote $600, for a grand total of $13,600. I have to accept/reject within the day (pressure tactics!) or risk losing the offer and having the car valuated.

I just called AAA as a potential insurance buyer and asked how they value cars for pay-out. She told me they use Blue Book dealer retail, which would be AWESOME for me.

Thoughts? Advice? Should I turn down the offer?
Now they’re telling me they haven’t used Kelley Blue Book dealer retail in years… I don’t know what to believe :
    $500 deductible
