    I understand now that term life insurance is the way to go, and then open up a Roth IRA. We are going to meet with our financial adviser and I would like to do more research, hence I’m asking you: What are some other safe ways to invest our money– other than whole life. Is there something else that is safe that falls between whole life (ultra safe) and buying a bunch of risky stock (ultra risky)?

So, i decided to do the smart thing and decide to get myself life insurance. I would like to know of people’s opinions on life insurance, and which ones are best for someone my age.

    A friend of mine recommended buying whole life insurance for my child. He said it was better than investing elsewhere. For example, you can get a 1 million dollar insurance which will be paid up by the time he is 18 at an annual rate of about 4500$. And this money grows to over 5 million when is 65 and is tax free. Withdrawal can be done at any time. What’s the catch?
    Thanks everyone for the response. I see that the recommendations lean towards not buying it. Strangely enough, I was told that it is very common among families that have lived in this country for over a couple of generations and it’s the immigrants who don’t understand the benefits of this insurance.

  15. Julia December 19, 2013 at 3:43 am Reply

    I read a previous thread suggesting MediCare, but I am not talking about HEALTH insurance. They only have term life insurance tied to current job, and they need to retire. They have no burial policy, and each is worried about leaving the other with burial expenses and debts. I have seen a few ads online, but when you get to the fine print, they seem mostly like scams. They probably wouldn’t get a very good rating if a health exam were required. Probably $15 -$25K max would be the amount needed. They live in Texas if that matters.

    I want to take out a life insurance policy on my mother. I don’t really know how to do it?.. She lives in a different state. She’s 48 years old right now. She just bought a house a couple of years ago and in the same years managed to get high balance credit cards and maxed them all out. And, I just recently found out that she put everything in my name so I get when she dies. She still owes 70,000.00 dollars on this house and I don’t want it. She lives in the middle of no where Virginia and I live in Wisconsin. I know 48 still seems young, but to be quite frank, she’s a pretty bad alcoholic and I don’t want to be strapped with all her debt when she passes. I know that sounds terrible but I don’t know what else to do. So, I was thinking about taking out an affordable policy, if that’s possible? I want to know what I would need from her, if anything, and if anyone knows what a policy might cost me? When you look online they ask you how long you want your policy to last, like 10,20 or 30 years. Does that mean if I take out a 20yr policy and she dies before then, I have to keep paying before I get a pay out? Or, if I take out a 10yr and she dies after, then I just wasted my money? I just don’t understand how it works so if someone could explain it to me in lamens terms, that’d be great. Thanks!
    to the hilt? She put the house in my name in her will but she still owes a ton of money on it. She doesn’t have any assets. Nothing she owns is worth any money.

    Hi i applied for life insurance through sun life financial. are they a good company? who do you get your life insurance from? is it even important?

    anyways, they still havent drawn up my policy since i have applied, even though was approved.
    All i was looking for was a simple life insurance i can afford, and they added in a whole bunch of accessories to go along with it. anyways, they keep coming back for many tests. which would have been hell of a lot convenient if they did these tests all in one place in one time. rather than having to do 4 or 5 tests over the past 4 months. it drives me crazy now that they are always phoning, needing this and that…now im starting to consider if i even want my life insurance with them
    also, is it even necessary to have life insurance along with critical illness and disability?
    i am just a studetn on a budget with two young boys at home. whats your take?
    ***they have been UNconvenient
    the one i have now is term
    the one that is expensive, i cannot afford. as i am student.<

    i also live in canada, universal health care and First nations coverage as well. do i even need life insurance

    My father all his life was dedicated to paying his “whole life joint life insurance” since 1982 the wording read “guaranteed the sum assured off £181,000” My father passed away in Aug aged 57. we then realize last year he was in touch with company due to receiving a letter out off the blue saying it was worth £41,000 (huge drop) never in all the years has this happened and his premium only rose. After he contracted ombudsman and the policy was changed to “£81,000”
    I am 99% sure they were wrong to change it in the first place. wording read “guaranteed sum assured off” “whole life” Never had this changed and his monthly premium only rose ! Please advise
    yes it sure was a traditional life insurance policy and was not unit linked the insurance company were wrong and no way will i let them off with this read bellow

    Heard an ad for a life insurance policy never heard before. It said if you do not die in a time frame not known, than your will get your money back. Is this the same as all policies that build a cash value simply worded differently or is there a new product on the market? If you care to speculate, then might health care insurance reform lead to such a policy being offered. Death is a bit more certain than needing health care.

    As I asked earlier whether should I buy term insurance or not.. as I already have a LIC policy… I got some really good response which has given me quite some information about term plan Vs normal insurance. I think i should opt for term plan as the premiums are really affordable.. i can chip in a few thousands a year to get a good a cover.. of course it will be taken on my husband’s name…I also want to know if I can save tax on the term insurance..if yes then it will be icing on the cake. I asked a couple of my friends and they suggested me to go from i-protect term plan.. should I buy it online or offline? which one is better? I am vouching the with the following options for the term plan ( not necessarily in the order of preference).

    1) i-Protect term plan from icici (i already have an account with them as I have salary account also we have a demat )

    2) Metlife

    3) i-term Religare

    Thank you for your time and efforts! 🙂

    Hello !! Michael,
    I am interested in a term life insurance policy for myself and my
    wife. We are 50 and 51 years of age and in overall good health.
    We are both overweight according to Farmers insurance
    guidelines. Everything was fine with regards to our health except
    for their restrictions about the weight issue.

    My question: What are we supposed to do in order to be insured
    with a reputable company ?
    We would be willing to pay a higher premium if necessary.
    Could you Please recommend some insurance companys that
    provide flexibility with regard to weight.

    Your help is appreciated !!!!

    I used to work at a company that offered a $10,000 life insurance policy as one of the benefits. There was a huge lay off while I worked there and I, like many others lost my job. Obviously, the company no longer pays a premium on me or my laid off co-workers, but they must have given the insurance company a lot of money when they were. Does the insurance company get to keep all the premiums paid on workers who are no longer with the company, or can the company apply those premiums to future employees?

    I currently have a 5 year term life insurance policy with State Farm and I was wondering if it were possible for me to make a withdrawl or loan from this policy. I researched this some and on some websites it said it wasn’t possible; however whenever I look on State Farms website it says the below:

    The State Farm® 5 Year Term policy provides affordable life insurance protection for a five year period and is renewable for subsequent 5-year periods until age 85 (age 80 in NY). It is great for covering any short-term life insurance needs you may have. Short-term life insurance needs may include such things as:

    * Car loan
    * College tuition
    * Home equity loan
    * Mortgage loan
    * Business loan
    * Student loan
    * Key employee

    Term insurance may also be appropriate when your life insurance needs are great but your budget is tight.

    Does this mean I can make a withdrawal so that I can pay off my student loans? Also, it seems that my policy has ended in December; however, I was still charged this month. The policy started in 2005.
